In far Northeast Oregon near Joseph, the lake reflects the Wallowa Mountains, home to the Eagle Cap Wilderness, called the Alps of America. This land was the ancestral home of the New Perce Indians, whose Chief Joseph is known for these words when he surrendered to the U.S. Army, “From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever.” His grave is near this spot. Interesting side not: My great grandfather, James P. Rains, was killed by a renegade band of the Nez Perce in 1870 near his homestead on the Salmon River in Idaho.
