Low Tide at Hug Point

This little sandy cove beach is under water when the tide is high. Lots of little inland seas are left behind as the tide recedes, it's really good for tide pooling. In the background is Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach. Note the tiny figure in the middle of the drawing standing on the rocks. He's walking along the old stagecoach road. Before Highway 1 was built this was the north south route along teh coast, you can still see the ruts carved into the rock. Travelers had to “hug” the headland carefully to avoid being splashed, thus the name.
